Permanent Glow Paints: Durability and Application

Durability

The base paint is highly UV resistant and highly water resistant.

Each cell of the table indicates normal comfortable Interior durability (Int) / Exterior durability (Ext) of correctly applied paint.

* Glow-in-the-dark effects will last as long as the paint film lasts. The normal deterioration of glow-in-the-dark properties is only 5% every 10 years.

Hiding Power

Green1, Aqua-blue, Blue, Violet, White: Almost no hiding power (transparent to semi-transparent).

Pink/Orange, Yellow/Green: Bright colour but semi-transparent to give highlighter pen effect.

Orange, Red, Green2: Good hiding power and will cover substrate well.

Surface colour

For glow-in-the-dark properties paints must be applied to white or light coloured surfaces.

Apply following paints to white or light surfaces only: Green1, Aqua-blue, Blue, Violet, Yellow/Green, Pink/Orange.

Apply following paints to any coloured surfaces: Orange, Red, White, Green2

Surface types

The paint has multi-surface adhesion technology and is suitable for adhesion to masonry, wood, iron, galvanized steel and many lightly sanded plastics.

  • All surfaces to be clean and oil/grease free
  • For best results prime exterior surfaces as you would for normal acrylic paint
  • Roughen smooth surfaces e.g. enamels and plastics with sand paper first.

As Glow Paints are quite expensive it is worth cleaning and priming exterior surfaces properly first if you need a very durable result.

Spread Rate, film uniformity, spray painting

Green 1, Aqua-blue, Blue, Violet, Pink/Orange, Yellow/Green:

These paints have high viscosity (thick) and don't spread very well. Brush marks will be evident. Expect 5-6 square meters per litre per coat on normal surfaces. These may be difficult to spray.

Orange, Red, White, Green2 :

These paints have a normal paint viscosity and spread like normal paints. Expect 8-9 square meters per litre per coat on normal surfaces.

Number of coats

Normally 2 coats should be used but in some cases the glow effect increases even further if a 3rd coat is applied.

Painting guidelines

Dry to touch in 30-60minutes

Wait 4 hours between coats

Paint should not be wet by rain etc for 4 hours after painting

Paint reaches full strength after 10 days and it should not be washed or scrubbed during this curing period. The paint film should also not be sealed over during this period.

Apply with brush or roller.

Orange, Red, White, Green 2 are suitable for airless spray application.

Caution

As per normal acrylic paint:

  • Apply in well ventilated areas
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do not swallow
  • Avoid excess skin contact
  • Avoid eye contact
